SUNY COBLESKILL AWARDS ITS 100TH NEW YORK STATE COACHING CERTIFICATION
The SUNY Cobleskill Department of Physical Education, Recreation & Leisure Studies announced today that the college has awarded its 100th New York State Coaching Certification. The program was initiated in the fall of 2004 to help meet New York State’s need for certified coaches at the elementary and secondary level. As of January 2008; SUNY Cobleskill has awarded 103 students, New York State Coaching Certifications.
“The New York State Coaching Certification is an important component of our Physical Education, Recreation & Leisure Studies curriculum and prepares our students for entry into the profession while at the same time enhancing their resumes,” said Department Chairman Kevin McCarthy. “We established our coaching certification program to meet a real need that had developed within our service area. We are extremely pleased with our program’s results to date and very excited about what can be accomplished in the future.”
The five-course certification program consists of: First Aid & Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (PERS 211), Current Issues in Health and Wellness (PERS 213), Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries (PERS 214), Organization & Administration of Physical Education, Athletics & Recreation (PERS 215) and Theory and Techniques of Coaching (PERS 216). SUNY Cobleskill Students enrolled in college’s Physical Education, Recreation & Leisure Studies program and Sports Management program are automatically eligible for coaching certification with students from other academic majors allowed to enroll in the program with departmental approval.
The State University of New York College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill is a fully accredited, comprehensive undergraduate residential college enrolling nearly 2,500 students. Academic programs are divided into three divisions: Agriculture and Natural Resources, Business and Computer Technologies and Liberal Arts and Sciences.
The college’s 750-acre campus is located in New York's Schoharie County-a picturesque and historic area approximately 160 miles northwest of New York City and midway between Albany and Oneonta in Schoharie County directly off Interstate 88 on the western edge of the town of Cobleskill, NY.
SUNY Cobleskill was chartered by an act of the state legislature in 1911 and opened its doors as the Schoharie State School of Agriculture in 1916. It is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in New York State.
