FIGHTING TIGER BASEBALL DOUBLES UP CGCC TWINS IN MVC FINALE

The SUNY Cobleskill baseball team closed out the 2008 Mountain Valley Conference season on Wednesday afternoon by traveling to Hudson, NY to convincingly sweep the Twins of Columbia-Greene Community College by scores of 21-2 and 19-9. The victories improve the Fighting Tigers season record to 13-16 and close out the league portion of the team’s schedule with a 7-9 mark.
Freshman second baseman Matt Greene, Albany, NY, Colonie High School, proved to be the offensive catalyst for the Fighting Tigers in game one going 4-for-4 from the lead-off spot with a double, four runs scored and an RBI while senior leftfielder Tristan Massalay-Ellis, Flushing, NY, John Bowne High School, continued his recent offensive tear going 2-for-4 with a double and five RBI.
Cobleskill freshman pitcher Tom Wiener, Montrose, NY, Hendrick Hudson High School, picked up the victory to improve his overall record to 4-3 on the year for the Orange & Black.
In the nightcap the Cobleskill offense continued to prove too much for the Twins pitching staff as senior first baseman Matt Hansen, Southold, NY, Southold High School, led the assault going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI complimented by designated hitter Tom Wiener who went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Senior second baseman Nick Poleto, Albany, NY, Colonie High School, was also a factor for the Orange & Black at the plate going 1-of-3 with a double and four RBI.
Freshman catcher Nate Shelton, Walton, NY, Walton High School, continued to be an important factor for the Fighting Tiger pitching staff helping freshman hurler Tim Capitummino, Schenectady, NY, Niskayuna High School, improve his overall record to 2-0 on the year. Shelton was also 3-for-4 in the doubleheader at the plate with a double, four walks, three runs scored and a pair of RBI. Capitummino also was a factor at the plate going 3-for-4 on the day.
The Fighting Tigers will return to action on Friday April 25th when they travel to Binghamton, NY, for a NJCAA Region III Division III doubleheader versus Broome Community College beginning at 2:00 PM. Cobleskill will then host the Red Barons of Corning Community College for a pair of games on Saturday April 26th at Fighting Tiger Field beginning at 1:00 PM. |
