FIGHTING TIGER BASEBALL SPLITS HOME OPENER WITH FMCC

The SUNY Cobleskill baseball team split their home opener at Fighting Tiger Field yesterday versus Mountain Valley Conference rival Fulton-Montgomery Community College taking the first game by a score of 6-0 then dropping the nightcap by a 7-0 margin. The Fighting Tigers move their overall record to 6-5 on the season with a 1-1 mark in conference play.
In the first game the Fighting Tigers played “small ball” to perfection squeezing six runs out of only three hits but capitalizing on six walks, four hit batsmen, five errors and a wild pitch by the Raiders to secure the victory. Leading 2-0 on a pair of ground out RBI going into the sixth inning; Cobleskill put the game away with a four-run frame highlighted by a two-out, two-run single off the bat senior rightfielder Matt Guerrido, Goshen, NY, Warwick High School. For the day Guerrido was 1-for-3 at the plate with a spectacular two-out running catch that ended the Raider’s fifth inning.
On the mound freshman right hander Tom Wiener, Montrose, NY, Hendrick Hudson High School, improved his record to 2-1 on the year and posted his first collegiate career shutout by going the distance striking out six while walking only two. The Cobleskill rookie needed only 91 pitches on the afternoon limiting the Raider offense to only four hits on the day.
In the nightcap the Fighting Tiger offense could manage only two hits in the game with Tom Wiener going 1-for-3 in a losing effort.
“Offensively while we did a good job in the first game taking advantage of our opportunities but there was very little to be pleased with in the second game,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Bill Makarowski. “Wiener did a great job for us on the mound in game one holding them down and needing only 91 pitches but we have a lot of work to do offensively.”
The Fighting Tigers are tentatively scheduled to the road traveling to Holyoke Community College in Holyoke, MA for a doubleheader on Saturday April 5th at for a 12:00 PM start before taking to the road on Sunday April 6th making the trek to Canandaigua, NY to meet Mid-State Conference power Finger Lakes Community College for a pair of games beginning at 1:00 PM. Cobleskill will then host Mountain Valley Conference rival Adirondack Community College for two games on Monday April 7th at Fighting Tiger Field beginning at 2:30 PM. All games and starting times are tentative based on the weather and field conditions. |
