COBLESKILL BASEBALL SWEEPS ADIRONDACK 2-1 & 12-4 IN LEAGUE PLAY

Less than 24 hours after dropping a doubleheader to Finger Lakes Community College on Sunday in Canandaigua, NY the SUNY Cobleskill baseball team was back in action hosting Adirondack Community College at Fighting Tiger Field for a Mountain Valley Conference doubleheader. Led by stellar pitching and defense, Cobleskill swept the visiting Timberwolves by scores of 2-1 and 12-4 to improve to 8-7 overall on the year with a 3-1 mark versus league opponents.
In game one Fighting Tiger Head Coach Bill Makarowski handed the ball to freshman right hander Matt Greene, Albany, NY, Colonie High School, and the rookie promptly ended the team’s three-game losing streak by limiting the visitors to only one unearned run on just three hits. Greene struck out eight and walked none to post the victory for Cobleskill.
The Orange & Black struck in the second inning offensively when senior leftfielder Dan Beck, Rotterdam, NY, Schalmont High School, and freshman centerfield Tim Capitummino, Schenectady, NY, Niskayuna High School, posted back-to-back singles, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt then both scored on a two-out error by the Adirondack shortstop.
Hitting-wise the Cobleskill attack was paced by freshman designated hitter Tom Wiener, Montrose, NY, Hendrick Hudson High School, who went 2-for-3 with a double and by senior rightfielder Matt Guerrido, Goshen, NY, Warwick Valley High School, who was also 2-for-3 on the day. Capitummino and Beck were each 1-for-3 in the contest while scoring the team’s runs.
In the nightcap the Fighting Tiger offense emerged as Cobleskill blasted the Timberwolves for 12 runs on 12 hits. Matt Greene, operating at shortstop in the game, went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and three RBI while Tim Capitummino was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Cobleskill also received strong contributions from Matt Guerrido who went 2-for-2 with three stolen bases and an RBI and from senior designated hitter Tristan Massalay-Ellis, Flushing, NY, John Bowne High School, who was 1-for-3 on the day including a; two-run triple two-out triple in the bottom of the fourth inning, that effectively put the game out of reach and made a winner out of pitcher Tom Wiener who improved to 3-1 on the season by going five innings: striking out three and walking two.
“In the first game I thought that Matt Greene showed a lot of command on the mound with the eight strikeouts and no walks and offensively we were able to string some hits together which allowed us to capitalize on their error in the second,” said Coach Makarowski. “In the second game we manufactured some runs early which opened the flood gates in the fourth and fifth innings. Overall our pitching was great, we executed at the plate, on the bases and our defense was solid. These were important wins to have and now we go to Hudson Valley on Friday.”
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Friday April 11th when they travel to Troy, NY to meet Mountain Valley Conference rival Hudson Valley Community College for a pair of games at Joe Bruno Stadium beginning at 4:00 PM. |
