FIGHTING TIGER BASEBALL SWEEPS FMCC IN MOUNTAIN VALLEY OPENER
The SUNY Cobleskill baseball team opened the Mountain Valley Conference season in style taking to the road to sweep a doubleheader from the Raiders of Fulton-Montgomery Community College in Johnstown, NY by scores of 8-4 and 12-5. With the victories the Fighting Tigers pushed their season record to 5-13 on the year with a 2-0 mark in conference play.
“I’m really excited about the way we played today because I think we executed very well in the pressure situations we faced,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Shawn Noel. “We hit the ball very well today and I think our pitching was extremely solid. We’re starting to show signs of maturity on the field which is going to be a key for us to make a play-off run this season.”
In the opener, Cobleskill pitcher freshman Matt Young, Delmar, NY, Bethlehem High School, was a one person wrecking crew going the distance and striking out 10 Raiders hitters in the process. Young also continued his torrid offensive output going 3-for-4 in the contest with a triple and a home run in the victory. Freshman second baseman Ron Smalling, Yaphank, NY, Longwood High School, also turned in a stellar effort going 3-for-4 with two RBI in the win.
In the nightcap, freshman hurler Mike Disarno, Grand Island, NY, Grand Island High School, held the Raiders in check going the distance to notch his first collegiate victory. Ron Smalling once again played a major role for Cobleskill offensively going 4-for-5 on the afternoon with four RBI in the contest. Freshman catcher Tyler Hibsch, Strykersville, NY, Pioneer High School, also posted a multi-hit effort going 2-for-5 outing with a pair of RBI on the afternoon.
The Fighting Tigers will put their three game winning streak on the line on Wednesday April 13th when they travel to Glens Falls, NY to meet the Timberwolves of Adirondack Community College in a Mountain Valley Conference contest beginning at 2:00 PM. |
