COBLESKILL BASEBALL SWEEPS NATIONALLY RANKED HUDSON VALLEY CC
The last time the SUNY Cobleskill men’s baseball program defeated Hudson Valley Community College the current Fighting Tiger team members were in either tee-ball or pea wee league. On Friday in Troy, NY the visiting Fighting Tigers swept the NJCAA Division III nationally ranked Vikings of Hudson Valley Community College defeating the home team for the first time since 1995 by scores of 4-2 and 6-5. The victories push the teams overall record to 9-11 on the season with a perfect 6-0 mark in league play to put Cobleskill on the top of the MVC.
Once again it was the senior duo of first baseman/pitcher Matt Young, Delmar, NY, Bethlehem High School, and third baseman/pitcher Mike Disarno, Grand Island, NY, Grand Island High School, that propelled the Cobleskill attack. Disarno took the mound in game one to deliver the victory allowing only two runs on three hits. The Grand Island native also went 2-for-7 at the plate in the contests. Young murdered Viking pitching going 6-for-8 on the day with a pair of doubles and two RBI on the afternoon. Young also went the distance in the game two victory holding the home team scoreless over the final four innings and striking out eight in the contest.
Freshman outfielder Adam Cernauskus, Cobleskill, NY, Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, was again a major factor at the plate after going 2-for-4 in the opener the local product crushed a two-run homer, his third of the season, in the first inning of game two going 1-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Normally known for his work behind the plate; Fighting Tiger catcher Tyler Hibsch, Strykersville, NY, Pioneer High School, provided additional firepower going 1-for-3 in game one with two RBI and going 1-for-2 in the nightcap with an RBI.
“To go on the road and beat a program the caliber of Hudson Valley is extremely important for us not only in terms of this season but in terms of the future,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Bill Makarowski. “We’ve said all along that we are an improved program and that we are playing much better baseball this season but I think winning today makes those statements more than just words. There’s still much work to be done but I think we have a legitimate shot at a post season appearance this season.”
The Fighting Tigers will return to action on Tuesday April 18th when they host the Royals of Schenectady Community College in Mountain Valley Conference action beginning at 2:00 PM at the SUNY Cobleskill Baseball Complex. |
