FIGHTING TIGER BASEBALL POSTS 10-7 ROAD VICTORY CGCC IN MVC PLAY
Faced with the most difficult portion of their schedule, seven games over a five day period, the SUNY Cobleskill men’s baseball team took to the road yesterday to post a 10-7 victory over Columbia-Greene Community College in Hudson, NY in a solo Mountain Valley Conference game. The victory pushed the Fighting Tiger overall record to 11-12 on the season with an 8-1 Mountain Valley Conference and NJCAA Region III record on the year. The loss drops Columbia-Greene to 1-18 overall on the season
“We got up 6-0 early but could not put them away and the game turned into a battle at the end,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Bill Makarowski. “We could not afford to take a loss today with an important doubleheader versus Herkimer tomorrow at home. I told the team that we are fighting for a trip to the post season and we can not give the selection committee reasons not to pick us. So today’s win is important because it keeps us in the hunt and maintains our momentum.”
Offensively senior shortstop Ron Smalling, Bellport, NY, Longwood High School, played a major factor in the win going 3-for-5 on the day with four RBI and a run scored. Senior catcher Rob Schmalz, Ronkonkoma, NY, Sachem High School, also posted a solid offensive outing with a 2-for-5 showing at the plate to go with a pair of runs batted in. Senior first baseman Matt Young, Delmar, NY, Bethlehem High School, hit his first home run of the season to go 1-for-4 with an RBI while starting pitcher John Wallace, Avoca, NY, Avoca High School, went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored for the Fighting Tigers.
Freshman outfielder/pitcher Adam Cernauskus, Cobleskill, NY, Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, picked up the win in relief coming in from right field to allow only one run in four innings of work allowing the Twins only three hits. Cernauskus also enjoyed another fine day at the plate going 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored.
The Fighting Tigers return home for a Mountain Valley Conference doubleheader versus league leading Herkimer Community College beginning at 3:00 PM.
