COBLESKILL BASEBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH CORNING CC
Once again the SUNY Cobleskill men’s baseball team found themselves in a desperate situation on Saturday afternoon at Fighting Tiger field. After dropping the first game of a doubleheader to Corning Community College by an 11-3 margin courtesy of seven errors the Fighting Tigers had blown a 5-3 seventh inning lead and now were looking at a 5-5 tie going into their final at-bats versus the Red Barons. But being “Senior Day”, Cobleskill turned to its upperclassmen for help.
Senior pitcher Matt Young, Delmar, NY, Bethlehem High School, led off the inning with an infield hit then promptly stole second base. After a passed ball moved Young to third, senior third baseman Mike Disarno, Grand Island, NY, Grand Island High School, promptly made a winner out of his long-time teammate ripping a single off pitcher Tom Hill to decide the contest.
The win put the Fighting Tigers season record at 15-15 overall with a 12-4 mark versus Region III Division III competition.
“We were flat in game one and maybe it’s to be expected considering the schedule but we’re in the stretch drive and can’t afford off-days in the field at this time of the season,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Bill Makarowski. “There’s not much else I can say about game two except we needed to win it, we did win it and I’m proud of our team’s ability to refocus and take care of business. I’m also proud of Matt Young and Mike Disarno for the leadership they showed today. When a team is in trouble; your seniors need to step-up, and get you out of the tough spots. Matt and Mike have done that for us all year and, thankfully, today was no exception.”
Young once again went the distance on the mound allowing only two earned runs on five hits striking out three and walking only one in the contest. At the plate the Delmar, NY native went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Disarno closed the game 1-for-3 at the plate with the game winning hit after a 1-for-3, one RBI performance in game one. Second baseman Brett Wrixon, Kingston, NY, Kingston High School, also was an offensive factor in the game going 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.
Senior catcher Tyler Hibsh, Strykersville, NY, Pioneer High School, posted a strong outing at the bat going 3-for-7 on the day with an RBI while freshman designated hitter John Wallace, Avoca, NY, Avoca High School, went 1-for-3 in game two with a double.
Cobleskill will now get some much needed time off before traveling to Utica, NY on Friday May 5th for a meeting with MVC rival Mohawk Valley Community College beginning at 3:00 PM. The Fighting Tigers will then host Clinton Community College on Saturday May 6th at 1:00 PM for the final doubleheader of the regular season at Fighting Tiger Field. |
