COBLESKILL’S YOUNG NAMED TO ALL-MOUNTAIN VALLEY BASEBALL TEAM
SUNY Cobleskill senior pitcher/first baseman Matt Young, Delmar, NY, Bethlehem High School, has been named to the All-Mountain Valley Conference Team for the second consecutive season by the league’s coaches. The Fighting Tiger co-captain helped lead Cobleskill to the program’s first winning overall season since 1995 and the best NJCAA Region III Division III record in program history and Mountain Valley Conference records in school history as the team posted an 18-17 overall mark with a 15-6 record versus NJCAA Region III Division III opponents and a 12-4 Mountain Valley Conference record. Cobleskill made its first NJCAA Region III Tournament appearance since 1995 falling to Genesee Community College in Batavia, NY 7-3 in the quarterfinal round and the 18 victories in during the year ties the Fighting Tiger record for most wins in a single season.
At the plate, Young was an offensive juggernaut for the Fighting Tigers batting .433 on the season with 12 doubles, three triples and two home runs with 12 stolen bases. A dynamic run producer, the Delmar native scored 35 runs and drove in 31 runs on the season. In the field, he posted a .988 fielding average committing only 2 errors in 170 attempts on the season. On the mound, the left-hander posted a 3-2 overall record with a 3.23 ERA in eight appearances on the season for Cobleskill.
“As good a player as Matt was last year, it was remarkable how much better of a player and team leader he was this season,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Bill Makarowski. “Matt is just an extremely solid all-round baseball player who does everything well on a baseball field. It was exciting to see his growth as a player and a leader during his time at Cobleskill and beyond that he is a great person.”
