COBLESKILL MEN CLIMB TO THIRD IN NJCAA DIVISION III NATIONAL POLL
The SUNY Cobleskill men’s basketball program ended the 2004 portion of their schedule on a high note moving up to the third spot in the NJCAA Division III National Poll. The Fighting Tigers closed the first semester with a perfect 12-0 record on the way to their highest ranking in the national poll since the 1997-98 season. Cobleskill has appeared in the national poll every week since December 4th of 1994. The Fighting Tigers are currently working on a streak of 10 consecutive twenty-win seasons and 12 NJCAA Region III Division III post-season appearances.
“Rankings always make for interesting conversation and the fans love them but there is still a lot of basketball left to play before March,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Kevin McCarthy. “With all of that said, I think that we’ve played some very good basketball this past week and that our team is starting to play very well together. I never get bored of seeing us in the national rankings but we’ve still got a long way to go.”
Cobleskill leads the nation in defensive scoring allowing the opposition to only 49.3 points on a 35.6% defensive field goal percentage. The Fighting Tigers are also ranked eighth in team scoring at 83.7 points per game and are also ranked eighth in offensive field goal percentage at 51.4%.
The Fighting Tigers will go on semester break and the return to action on Wednesday January 12th when they host Corning Community College beginning at 7:00 PM.
