FIGHTING TIGERS HOLD OFF CLINTON CC 64-61 IN MEN’S BASKETBALL
Playing their third road game in a five day period the SUNY Cobleskill men’s basketball team turned back a determined Clinton Community College team on the Cougars’ home court in Plattsburgh, NY on Saturday by a 64-61 margin. The victory evened the Fighting Tigers season record at 2-2 on the year and marked the team’s first road win after a pair of early season setbacks.
“I would yell at the athletic director about putting me on the road some much at this point of the year but since I am the athletic director that would be counter productive,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Kevin McCarthy. “We played well in spurts today but we are going through the growing pains that young team’s experience in early season play. This was an important win from a confidence standpoint and we now need to use this momentum to keep us going in the right direction because the athletic director scheduled another road game on Monday night at Schenectady.”
The Fighting Tigers used a balanced attack to secure the victory with freshman guard Jason Taylor, Deer Park, NY, Ossining High School, scoring 12 points to lead all Cobleskill scorers. Freshman forward Anthony Armstead, Schenectady, NY, Schenectady High School, posted nine points to go with nine rebounds while freshman guard Josh Young, Coram, NY, Longwood High School, scored nine points, passed out four assists, grabbed six rebounds and made three steals on the evening.
Cobleskill also received strong contributions from freshman center/forward Chris Matombo, Queens, NY, Francis Lewis High School, with six points and three rebounds and from freshmen point guards Joe McCarthy, Warwick, NY, Warwick High School, with six points and six assists and Harley Fuller, Gloversville, NY, Broadalbin-Perth High School, with six points, three rebounds and two assists. Freshman forward/center Gerald Rasberry, Bronx, NY, John F. Kennedy High School, also chipped in six points, five rebounds and two steals in the win.
The Fighting Tigers will open Mountain Valley Conference play on Monday November 13th when they travel to Schenectady, NY to meet the Royals of Schenectady Community College beginning at 7:00 PM.
TIGER NOTES: Former Fighting Tiger All-Regional and All-Mountain Valley Conference performer Jamel Lynch, Brooklyn, NY, opened his Division I career with the University of Rhode Island on Saturday by grabbing two rebounds versus Stonehill College in the Rams 86-62 season opening victory. Fighting Tiger Head Coach Kevin McCarthy now has 294 career victories at Cobleskill.
