FIGHTING TIGER MEN KNOCK CORNING RED BARONS OUT OF SKY 87-66
The Red Barons of Corning Community College brought a high powered offense to Cobleskill, NY last night intending to make the host Fighting Tigers run and gun their way to victory. However the Fighting Tigers showed that they had more than enough manpower, fuel and ammunition to turn back their determined visitors by an 87-66 margin at the Iorio Gymnasium last night. The victory moves Cobleskill’s overall record to 4-2 on the season.
In front of a crowd of over 750 fans the Fighting Tigers made a series of highlight reel plays that brought the Cobleskill faithful to their feet on a number of occasions as they established a 46-35 halftime lead. The orange & black then opened the second half on an 18-4 run that put the contest out of reach at 64-39.
The Fighting Tiger inside players dominated the action from the opening tip as freshman forward Anthony Armstead, Schenectady, NY, Schenectady High School, scored 14 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked five shots on the evening and freshman forward Stanley Francois, Valley Cottage, NY, Suffern High School, scored 17 points, took down six rebounds and passed out three assists. Cobleskill also received a double digit scoring effort from freshman guard Jason Talyor, Deer Park, NY, Ossining High School, who scored 16 points to go with four assists on the night.
A diversified Cobleskill attack was keyed by the efforts of: freshman point guard Harley Fuller, Gloversville, NY, Broadalbin-Perth High School, who scored nine points, grabbed three rebounds and passed out four assists, freshman center/forward Vladimir Colas, Warwick, NY, Warwick High School, who scored six points and snatched five rebounds, and senior swingman Devon Moore, Brooklyn, NY, Family Academy, who added four points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals in the contest. Freshman guard Josh Young, Coram, NY, Longwood High School, also chipped in eight points to the victory totals.
“Anyone who knows our program knows that we have no problem playing up-tempo basketball and that we like to run,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Kevin McCarthy. “I thought we did a good job of sharing the basketball and playing together as a team which is vital in this type of game. Our defensive improvement and rebounding were key reasons to us getting out on the break and creating easy opportunities. Anytime we do that I’m a very happy person.”
The Fighting Tigers will return to Mountain Valley Conference action on Tuesday November 21st when they travel to Hudson, NY to meet the Twins of Columbia-Greene Community College with tip-off set for 7:00 PM.
