FIGHTING TIGER MEN STOP FINGER LAKES 82-67 IN HOME OPENER
Using their trademark pressure defense and a diversified offense the SUNY Cobleskill men’s basketball team wore down visiting Finger Lakes Community College in the Fighting Tigers’ home opener Tuesday night in front of a raucous Iorio Gymnasium crowed by an 82-67 margin. The Fighting Tigers, who are currently ranked twelfth in the latest NJCAA Division III National Poll, move to 2-0 on the season with the victory.
“I thought that we did a good job of getting out on them defensively and disrupting their offensive flow,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Kevin McCarthy. “Down the stretch we finished shots in the paint and in transition to put them away. Certainly our size and depth played a part in wearing them down which has always been one of our staples over the years. Now we’ve got to get ready for Cayuga on Thursday night.”
Freshman guard Nyquan Bellamy, Poughkeepsie, NY, Poughkeepsie High School, came off the Cobleskill bench to terrorize the Finger Lakes’ defense with 22 points including six from beyond the three-point line. The Fighting Tigers also pounded the paint as senior forward Stanley Francois, Suffern, NY, Suffern High School, scored 13 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists, freshman center Kareem Corprew, Brooklyn, NY, Grand Street High School, tossed in 13 points to go with seven rebounds and senior forward Anthony Armstead, Schenectady, NY, Schenectady High School, had 15 points and two blocked shots on the evening.
Fighting Tiger point guard Harley Fuller, Gloversville, NY, Gloversville High School, once again played the role of floor general to perfection with an 11 assist, five, point, four steal, four rebound effort while freshman guard Matt Williams, Mt. Kisco, NY, Fox Lane High School, added five points, four rebounds and four assists on the evening.
Cobleskill will next be in action on Thursday November 8th when they host the Spartan of Cayuga Community College from Auburn, NY with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 PM.
TIGER NOTES: The Fighting Tigers blistered the Laker defense from the field connecting on 29 of 55 shots from the field to shoot an impressive 52.7% from the floor including an outstanding 8 of 11 from three-point range for a 72.7% mark. Harley Fuller has now posted double digit assist effort eight times during his Fighting Tiger career.
