FIGHTING TIGERS OVERRUN CAYUGA SPARTANS 99-50 IN MEN’S HOOPS
The SUNY Cobleskill men’s basketball team saw that the Cayuga Community College Spartans did not live up to their nickname’s heritage as the Fighting Tigers quickly overwhelmed the visitors from Auburn, NY by a 99-50 margin at the Iorio Gymnasium last night. Cobleskill is currently ranked twelfth in the latest NJCAA Division III National Poll with a perfect 3-0 record to date.
The Fighting Tigers staged a vicious assault upon the Spartans’ defense from the opening tip, taking a 46-17 lead into halftime break. Cobleskill then cruised to the final margin of victory using their entire roster liberally throughout most of the second half.
Freshman guard Matt Williams, Mt. Kisco, NY, Fox Lane High School, scored a career high of 18 points to go with three assists to spearhead the Cobleskill attack. The Fighting Tigers also received double digit scoring efforts from senior forward Stanley Francois, Suffern, NY, Suffern High School, who scored 14 points to go with six rebounds, freshman center Victor Ljuljojuraj, Yorktown Heights, NY, Lakeland High School, who added 14 points and five rebounds and from senior guard Darryl Burns Jr., Brooklyn, NY, Art & Design High School, who had 10 points on the evening.
Cobleskill senior point guard Harley Fuller, Gloversville, NY, Broadalbin-Perth High School, continued to play the role of floor general to perfection with a seven point, seven assist, four rebound and three steal effort while senior power forward Anthony Armstead, Schenectady, NY, Schenectady High School, chipped in six points, four rebounds and three blocked shots on the night. Freshman guard Nyquan Bellamy, Poughkeepsie, NY, Poughkeepsie High School, continued to impress from the perimeter with eight points to go with a pair of assists on in the victory and senior swingman Vladimir Colas, Warwick, NY, Warwick High School, came off the bench to add five points and three rebounds.
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Saturday November 10th when they host the Cougars of Clinton Community College for a NJCAA Region III contest with tip-off scheduled for 1:00 PM.
TIGER NOTES: The Fighting Tigers had one of their best shooting efforts in recent seasons connecting on 38 of 62 shots from the field for a percentage of 61.3 including 9 of 20 from the beyond the three-point line for a 45.0% average. Cobleskill also made 14 of 19 shots from the charity stripe for a very respectable mark of 73.7%. The Fighting Tigers displayed great unselfishness passing the basketball as 27 of the team’s 38 field goals were assisted. The Orange & Black also continued to show great depth as 14 of the 18 players employed in the contest scored.
