FIGHTING TIGER LACROSSE POUNDS MOHAWK VALLEY 16-8
Playing their second game in just under twenty-four hours, the SUNY Cobleskill men’s lacrosse team showed little sign of letdown pounding visiting Mohawk Valley Community College by a 16-8 margin in Mountain Valley Conference action yesterday at the Cobleskill Lacrosse Complex. The victory pushes the team’s overall record to 3-6 on the year with a 1-2 mark versus league competition. The win also gave the program their most victories since the 2003 season when the Orange & Black finished the year with a 3-7 overall record. It also gives Cobleskill its first two-game winning streak since 2003 when the team won its first two games of the year.
“I think earlier this season because of our lack of overall numbers, our offensive continuity was hurt. But now we’re playing better together and the confidence and cohesiveness we’ve developed with each other is starting to show in our balanced scoring attack,” said first-year Fighting Tiger Head Coach Ryan Gunzinger. “Offensively we’ve started to move the ball around better and take open shots as opposed to earlier in the season when we played too much one-on-one and forced too many shots. We’re doing a better job of controlling the tempo and as a result of this and our defense gets more time to rest and our goalie faces fewer opportunities. Now we need to carry this momentum into the weekend and finish the year on a high note.”
Once again the Fighting Tigers featured a balanced scoring attack as senior midfielder Tom Cunningham, Skaneateles, NY, Skaneateles High School, made his last home game a memorable one by shredding the Hawk defense for five goals and one assist. The freshman trio of: attackman Joe LaBadia, Bethel, CT, Bethel High School, with three goals and two assists, freshman midfielder/attackman Andrew Abbott, Onondaga, NY, Onondaga High School, with three goals and one assist and freshman midfielder/attackman Matt Hughes, Wallkill, NY, Wallkill High School, with three goals and two assists continued to attack the goal with a vengeance throughout the action. Freshman attackman/midfielder Tim Clark, Utica, NY, Thomas R. Proctor High School, was also a multiple scorer on the day with a goal and two assists in the game. The other Fighting Tiger goal was scored by senior reserve goalie Tim Hughes, Wallkill, NY, Wallkill High School, who inserted into an attackman slot in his final home game didn’t disappoint the crowd finding the back of the net with 9:24 remaining in regulation.
Fighting Tiger freshman goalkeeper Brad Wilson, James I. O’Neill High School, made 10 saves in the game to post his second victory of the week while freshman defender Blane Murray, Waterloo, NY, Waterloo High School, played havoc with the Hawks offensive attack throughout the contest.
The Fighting Tigers will next travel to Delhi, NY, on Sunday April 28th for their last Mountain Valley Conference game of the season versus the Broncos of SUNY Delhi beginning at 1:00 PM before closing the year on the road on Sunday April 29th when they travel to Franklin, MA for a game versus Dean College beginning at 2:00 PM.
