FIGHTING TIGER LAX DEFEATS DELAWARE TECH 10-8
The SUNY Cobleskill men’s lacrosse team evened their record on their annual spring trip on Friday defeating Delaware Technical & Community College-Terry in Dover, DE by a 10-8 margin. With the victory Cobleskill moves to 2-2 on the season after four outings.
With the scored knotted at 8-8 entering the fourth period, freshman attackman Jack Hitchins, East Greenbush, NY, Columbia High School, took a pass from fellow rookie attackman Branden Wemssen, Seaford, NY, Seaford High School, and found the back of the net with 10:34 remaining to give the Orange & Black the lead for good at 9-8. Wemssen then set up senior attackman Matt Hughes, Wallkill, NY, Wallkill High School, for an insurance goal with 7:59 remaining to secure the margin of victory.
Defensively the Fighting Tigers showed their experience rallying around freshman goalkeeper Robert McDonald, Amherst, NY, Amherst High School, and held their hosts scoreless in the final stanza. McDonald posted a 15 save performance on the afternoon in support of his veteran defensive unit.
Matt Hughes keyed the Cobleskill offense in the win with a four goal two assist performance while Branden Wessen had two goals to go with his two final period assists. Senior midfielder Andrew Abbott, Onondaga, NY, Onondaga High School, also had two goals and two assists on the afternoon and was joined in the scoring column by freshman midfielder Alex Harwylkiewicz, West Babylon, NY, West Babylon High School, who added a goal and an assist on the afternoon.
The Fighting Tigers will get some down time from their trip before opening the home portion of the schedule on Saturday March 29th when they host the nation’s number five ranked team the Tribunes of Monroe Community College from Rochester, NY with face-off scheduled for 1:00 PM.
