COBLESKILL LACROSSE TOPS MERCYHURST NORTHEAST 13-11

The SUNY Cobleskill men’s lacrosse team took the long journey to Erie, PA on Saturday to post an important 13-11 win over NJCAA Region III rival Mercyhurst Northeast College on the Saints home turf. The victory improves the Fighting Tiger overall record to 3-5 on the season with a 1-3 mark versus regional competition.
Tied with the Saints at 10-10 heading into the fourth period the Fighting Tigers broke the stalemate with 4:41 remaining in regulation on a solo goal by freshman attackman Brendan Wemssen, Seaford, NY, Seaford High School, then scored the eventual game winner with 2:21 remaining when senior attackman Matt Hughes, Wallkill, NY, Wallkill High School, took a pass from freshman attackman Jake Hutchins, East Greenbush, NY, Columbia High School, and found the back of the home team’s net. After the Saints scored with 1:51 left in regulation to cut the margin 12-11, freshman midfielder Matt Pierce, Ogdensburg, NY, Heuvelton High School, scored an unassisted goal with 1:24 left in the game for the final margin of victory.
On the day: Matt Hughes continued his strong season with a five goal performance in the contest, Brandan Wemssen added three goals on the afternoon while senior midfielder Andrew Abbott, Onondaga, NY, Corcoran High School, posted two goals. Cobleskill also received a goal and an assist from Alex Harwylkiewicz, West Babylon, NY, West Babylon High School, and a solo goal from freshman midfielder Hunter D’Andraia, Albany, NY, New Paltz High School. Jack Hutchins was the major distributor for the Fighting Tiger offense with five assists in the contest.
In the net freshman goalkeeper Rob McDonald, Amherst, NY, Amherst High School, made 19 saves on the afternoon while positioning the Fighting Tiger defensive unit effectively throughout the contest.
Cobleskill returns to action on Monday April 14th when they host the Spartans of Cayuga Community College at the Cobleskill Lacrosse Complex beginning at 4:00 PM. |
