FIGHTING TIGER SWIMMERS SHINE 2003 REGION III CHAMPIONSHIPS
The SUNY Cobleskill men and women’s swimming & diving teams continued to show improvement with the men finishing fifth and the women seventh at the NJCAA Region III Championships hosted by Monroe Community College in Rochester, NY over the weekend.
The highlight of the meet for the Fighting Tigers was senior NJCAA All-American Heather Frees, Johnstown, NY, Johnstown High School, earning All-Region III honors by winning the 500 Freestyle in a time of 5:35.78. Frees also placed second in the 200 Butterfly, 2:29.04, and third in the 100 Butterfly, 1:05.09.
On the men’s side individually freshman Sunny Porras, New York, NY, Great Neck North High School, placed third in the 100 Butterfly, 57.46, third in the 100 Freestyle, 52.94, and third in the 500 Freestyle, 5:39.07, while teammate freshman Justin Dufel, Fonda, NY, Fonda-Fultonville High School, placed fourth in the 50 Freestyle, 23.33, third in the 100 Breaststroke, 1:07.31, and third in the 100 Freestyle, 51.95.
The Fighting Tiger men’s relay team of Sunny Porras, Justin Dufel, freshman Adam Jurczynski, Schenectady, NY, Guilderland High School, and Matt Turner, Stoney Point, NY, North Rockland High School, placed fifth in the 200 Freestyle Relay, 1:41.96, fourth in the 200 Medley Relay, 1:59.42, and third in the 400 Freestyle Relay, 3:49.47.
Cobleskill also received scoring performances from: freshman Barbara Ridley, Lafayette, NY, Janesville-Dewitt High School, who placed ninth in the women’s 200 Breaststroke, 3:19.01, Matt Turner who was tenth in the 200 Freestyle, 2:08.11, and Adam Jurczynski who placed eleventh in the 50 Freestyle, 29.37.
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action at the NJCAA National Championships hosted by Erie Community College in Buffalo, NY from March 6th thru March 8th. |
