FIGHTING TIGER MEN’S TENNIS BLANKS HERKIMER 9-0 IN MVC FINALE
With an NJCAA Region III Tournament bid on the line the SUNY Cobleskill men’s tennis team showed little mercy to visiting Mountain Valley Conference rival Herkimer Community College yesterday at the Cobleskill Tennis Complex. The Fighting Tigers did not lose a single set in the match posting a 9-0 whitewashing of the Generals to push their overall record to 4-3 on the season with a 3-1 mark versus league competition. The victory also assures the Fighting Tigers a spot in the regional play-offs this weekend at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, NY.
“We looked at this as an excellent opportunity to perfect our game heading into the regional tournament and given the results, I’m extremely pleased,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Scott Hill. “We changed up our doubles line-up in preparation for the regionals implementing a more traditional approach and we didn’t miss a beat taking all three matches. I think if we keep playing this way it could be an extremely interesting regional.”
Once again defending NJCAA Region III Champion senior Steve Weiss, Getzville, NY, Williamson, NY, took the number one singles spot by identical scores of 6-3 and 6-3 while at the number two singles spot senior Andy Steiner, Perry, NY, Perry High School, made quick work of the opposition taking the flight by scores of 6-2 and 6-3. Weiss and Steiner then teamed at the number one doubles to win by an 8-3 tally in a pro-set.
Freshman John Hazelton, Greenville, NY, Greenville High School, took the number three singles spot by scores of 6-4 and 6-4 while fellow freshman Greg Klopfeer, Voorheesville, NY, Voorheesville High School, won at the number four singles by scores of 6-2 and 6-3. The Fighting Tiger freshman duo then teamed to win at the second doubles spot by an 8-5 margin in a pro-set.
At the number five singles position freshman Andy Crane, Exeter, ME, Dexter Regional High School, won by scores of 6-1 and 6-3 then joined senior Ashok Ramani, Valatie, NY, Ichabod Crane High School, to win at number three doubles by an 8-5 score in a pro-set. Ramani had earlier in the match taken the number six singles by scores of 6-4 and 6-3.
