FIGHTING TIGER MEN’S TENNIS DEFEATS DELHI TECH 6-3
The SUNY Cobleskill men’s tennis team took to the road on Wednesday to post their second consecutive win of the season defeating the Broncos of Delhi Tech by a 6-3 margin in Delhi, NY. With the victory the Fighting Tigers move to 2-1 on the season with a 1-0 record in Mountain Valley Conference play.
The Fighting Tigers dominated singles play winning five of six matches led by freshman number one singles Steve Weiss, Getzville, NY, Williamson North High School, who won his match by scores 6-3, 6-7 and 6-0 to push his individual record to 3-0 on the season and then teamed with freshman Andy Steiner, Perry, NY, Perry High School, to win at first doubles by a 10-3 margin. Steiner earlier had recorded a victory at the number two singles spot by scores of 6-1 and 6-2.
Senior Derek Norberg, Middleburgh, NY, Middleburgh High School, continued his winning ways at the number three singles spot by scores of 6-4 and 6-1 while freshman number four singles Perry Gould, Cortlandt Manor, NY, Hendrick Hudson High School, won his match by scores of 6-3 and 6-3. Freshman Mike Hooker, Cicero, NY, Cicero-North Syracuse High School, rounded out the victory for Cobleskill winning at the number five singles spot by scores of 6-3 and 7-6.
“Opening up our Region III and Mountain Valley Conference schedules with a win was huge for us,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Scott Hill. “We have now equaled our win total over the past two seasons combine and this was our first road win in two years. I think these are important milestones from the standpoint that it shows our players that we are moving in the right direction as we continue to rebuild our program. I was very please with our effort and execution today and with two difficult matches on the horizon we are prepared to see just how far we’ve come this year.”
The Fighting Tigers will host the defending 2005 NJCAA Region XV Champions from Suffolk Community College on Saturday April 8th at 11:00 AM then play host to 2005 NJCAA Runner-Up Onondaga Community College on Monday April 10th beginning at 4:00 PM. Onondaga placed fifth at the 2005 NJCAA Division III National Championships while Suffolk placed tenth at the event.
TIGER NOTES: The Fighting Tigers 2006 schedule is among the toughest in the country featuring four teams, Holyoke Community College, Onondaga Community College, Broome Community College and Suffolk Community College, who qualified for the 2005 NJCAA Division III National Championships. The team’s two match winning streak is the program’s longest since the 2002 season. The Fighting Tigers prior to the match had not won a road contest since the final match of the 2004 season when they defeated Herkimer Community College in Herkimer, NY by a 7-2 margin. |
