COBLESKILL MEN’S TENNIS TOPS MVCC 7-2 CLINCHES REGIONAL TENNIS BID
With a dominate performance in singles play, the SUNY Cobleskill men’s tennis team solidly defeated an undermanned visiting Mohawk Valley Community College squad 7-2 on Tuesday at the Cobleskill Tennis Complex in Mountain Valley Conference action. The victory pushes the Fighting Tiger overall record to 5-2 on the season with a 3-0 mark versus MVC opponents. The win also qualifies the program for the NJCAA Region III Tournament for the first time since the 2000 season. The 2000 season was also the last time the Cobleskill program posted a winning record for a season .
“Our goals for this year were to post a winning record, to contend for the Mountain Valley Conference title and to qualify for the Region III Tournament and our kids have worked extremely hard to make those things happen to this point,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Scott Hill. “Today was typical from the standpoint that it was not the prettiest display of tennis that one will ever see but somehow we found a way to win. We don’t win based on raw ability; we win by grinding it out and competing for every single point. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished to this juncture of the season but we still have Broome and Herkimer with much left on the table to finish.”
Freshman number one singles Steve Weis, Getzville, NY, Williamson North High School, continued his winning ways grinding out a three set win by scores of 4-6, 7-5 and 6-3 while freshman number two singles Andy Steiner, Perry, NY, Perry High School, dominated his match by margins of 6-0 and 6-1. At the number three singles spot senior captain Derek Norberg, Middleburgh, NY, Middleburgh High School, battled to a three set win by scores of 6-2, 6-7 and 7-6. Cobleskill also claimed victories at the number four singles where freshman Perry Gould, Cortlandt Manor, NY, Hendrick Hudson High School, won by scores of 6-2 and 6-3 and at the number five singles position with freshman Mike Hooker, Cicero, NY, Cicero-North Syracuse High School, looking sharp winning by tallies of 6-0 and 6-2. Cobleskill claimed the number six singles match and the number three doubles by default to cement the victory margin.
The Fighting Tigers will return to the courts on Saturday April 22nd when they host defending NJCAA Region III Champion Broome Community College beginning at 1:00 PM before traveling to Herkimer, NY on Tuesday April 25th to meet the Generals of Herkimer Community College for the final Mountain Valley Conference match of the year beginning at 4:00 PM
