HILL NAMED 2006 MOUNTAIN VALLEY CONFERENCE MEN’S TENNIS
COACH-OF-THE-YEAR
The Mountain Valley Conference announced today that first-year SUNY Cobleskill Head Men’s Tennis Coach Scott Hill has been named the league’s 2006 Coach-of-the-Year after the Fighting Tigers won their first league title in program history after 23 years of conference affiliation. Hill led Cobleskill to one of the best turn-around seasons in the NJCAA Division III ranks this year posting a 7-2 overall record with a perfect 4-0 mark versus league opponents. The team qualified for the NJCAA Region III Tournament for the first time since 1998, placing fourth, and won the most games by a Cobleskill team since 1997 when the Fighting Tigers finished 7-5. The Fighting Tigers also posted an equally impressive 3-1 record versus teams that qualified for the 2005 NJCAA Division III National Championship Tournament including the defending NJCAA Region III Champion Broome Community College, defending NJCAA Region XV Champion Suffolk Community College and defending NJCAA Region XXI Champion Holyoke Community College.
Under Hill’s tutelage Fighting Tiger number one singles Steve Weiss, Getzville, NY, Williamson North High School, became the first player in Cobleskill men’s tennis history to win an individual championship and has now earned a place in the 2006 NJCAA Division III National Championship Tournament to be hosted by Collin Community College in Plano, TX from May 16th through May 20th. The talented freshman was named to the First Team All-NJCAA Region III Team for his efforts.
“It is always nice to receive acclaim for your coaching but this award is really a testament to the determination and hard work that our team put in throughout this season,” said Hill. “I am very proud of these young men and what they have accomplished collectively this season. Hollywood could not have written a better script for my first year as head coach and this team has provided me with one of the most enjoyable experiences in my coaching career.”
The Rochester, NY native was an outstanding player during his prep years competing for Medfield High School where he was the team's captain. He was also a two-year member of Team Rochester an elite junior program during that time. Hill is also the Fighting Tigers Head Women's Volleyball a position he has held since 2002 and this past season led Cobleskill to the Mountain Valley Conference Championship and an NJCAA Region III Tournament appearance. Earlier this year, he was honored the 2005 MVC Volleyball Coach-of-the-Year after posting a perfect 7-0 record in conference play while equaling the program record for most wins in a single season with a 21-6 overall mark.
Hill came to the Fighting Tigers from Springfield College in Springfield, MA where he served as an Internal/External Site Manager from 2001 thru 2003 while earning his M.Ed. in Athletic Administration in May of 2003. He earned his Bachelors Degree in Exercise Science from Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY in 1995. Currently he is employed full-time by SUNY Cobleskill as an Instructor in the Department of Physical Education/Recreation & Sports Studies. |
