COBLESKILL SOFTBALL DROPS THREE-OF-FOUR OVER WEEKEND
The SUNY Cobleskill women’s softball team dropped three-of-four contests on a weekend road trip that left the Fighting Tigers overall record at 5-7 for the 2008 campaign. The Orange & Black opened on a positive note on Saturday defeating the Bulldogs of Dean College in Franklin, MA in the opener of a doubleheader by a 5-3 margin before dropping the second game by a score of 5-1. On Sunday, Cobleskill lost both ends of a NJCAA Region III doubleheader to the Cougars of Clinton Community College by scores of 9-2 and 6-3 in Plattsburgh, NY.
In Saturday’s win over Dean; freshman hurler Sheri Boardman, Sheffield, MA, Housatonic High School, returned to her native state to stop the Bulldogs, scattering six hits in the contest, striking out five while walking only one batter.
Freshman leftfielder Nicole Garzon, Oakland Gardens, NY, Benjamin Cardoza High School, provided the offensive for the Orange & Black going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI as did freshman first baseman Casey Kelly, Walton, NY, Walton High School, who was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman centerfielder Liz Goyette, Ferrisburg, VT, Vergennes High School, was also a factor from the lead-off spot going 2-for-4 with a stolen base and two runs scored in the game.
In the second game, Nicole Garzon continued her hot hitting with a 2-for-4 effort including a double as did Casey Kelly with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate. However the Fighting Tigers could manage only two addition hits scoring their only run in the top of the seventh inning.
Against the Cougars on Sunday, freshman utility player Lauren Tinger, West Lebanon, NY, Lebanon High School, went 2-for-3 in the opener with an RBI in the opener then went 1-for-3 with an RBI in game two. The only other bright sports for the Fighting Tigers at the plate came in the second game: with Casey Kelly going 1-for-3 with and RBI and Liz Goyette going 1-for-2 with a double and a stolen base.
The Fighting Tigers are tentatively scheduled to host the Royals of Schenectady Community College on Tuesday April 2nd at Fighting Tiger Park for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 PM.
