- Preparation for Veterinary Careers: an Intensive Animal Experience - Animal Care Institute at SUNY Cobleskill
COURSE DETAILS
The course is broken into three experiences, and within these experiences there are 19 modules.
1. Livestock – care and management of beef, sheep goats, swine, and rabbits
Can consist of but not limited to parasite control, feeding protocols, ration adjustment, hoof trimming vaccination, pasture evaluation, weight and gain monitoring, breeding (4 students).
2. Dairy – care and management of college dairy herd, milking, calf care, breeding, feeding protocols, hoof care, parturition, management and confinement and pasture situations, vaccinations, hospital and maternity animal management (8 students - 4 milking, 4 feeding).
3. Equine – care and management of pleasure horses and breeding stock, foal handling, exposure to training, treating minor injuries, feeding protocols, stall maintenance, grooming, exposure to farrier work (8 students - 4 upper facility, 4 lower facility).
These experiences are broken up into rotations as follows. Each rotation is 8.5 days. Some rotations start at 4am
Rotation 1: Wednesday – Thursday AM
Rotation 2: Thursday PM – Friday PM
Rotation 3: Saturday AM – Sunday PM
Students are expected to perform animal care in the areas assigned for each scheduled rotation. Some free time is schedule into each rotation weekend.
There will be a final exam (lab practical/written portion) on July 9.
