SUNY Cobleskill to Conduct Horse Genetics Seminar at Racing Museum

SUNY Cobleskill’s Thoroughbred Management Program will conduct its second annual Professional Horse Farm Managers Seminarat the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs on Tuesday, August 26 from 1 to 5 p.m. This year’s seminar, “Topics in Equine Genetics,” will feature presentations by Dr. Ernest Bailey, Dr. Samantha Brooks and Dr. Gus Cothran.

“We are fortunate to have the opportunity to listen to such an esteemed group of speakers on a topic that is relevant and critical to every horse enthusiast,” said Ray Whelihan, SUNY Cobleskill assistant professor and seminar organizer.

Dr. Ernest Bailey will address the topic “What the Horse Owner Should Know about Horse Genomics.” Bailey is a professor at the MH Gluck Equine Research Center and conducts research and graduate student training in horse genetics, including immunogenetics, gene mapping, cytogenetics and equine coat color genetics.

Dr. Samantha Brooks, a professor in the Animal Science Department at Cornell University, will present “What Can the Genome Do for You?  Current and Future Applications of Equine Genomics.”  Brooks has conducted research in gene expression and inflammation, with particular interest in laminitis, as well as coat color genetics.

Dr. Gus Cothran, a clinical professor in the department of Veterinary Integrative Biosciences at Texas A&M University, will speak about “Lessons in Conservation Genetics from the Standardbred Horse.” Cothran is involved in research in genetic mapping, genetics of specific characteristics, population genetics and conservation genetics of rare breeds.

The seminar is sponsored by Sequel Stallions, United States Trotting Association, Pin Oak Stud, Equine Clinic at Oakencroft, Stonebridge Farm and Buttonwood Farm.
