New Blood Chemistry Technology Featured at SUNY Cobleskill For Immediate Release

Imagine taking a small drop of whole blood and being able to analyze blood gasses, blood salts, blood sugar, pH, the percentage of red blood cells, and a number of other organic constituents at the patient's bedside and having the results in two minutes. This is exactly the new technology (an i-STAT point-of-care analyzer) now available at SUNY Cobleskill thanks to a generous program initiative supported by the SUNY Cobleskill Faculty-Student Association.

"This new device enables us to analyze samples in a few minutes what would normally take us nearly a week to do with four or five more expensive and larger instruments," says Dr. Murphy of the Department of Natural Sciences. "Further, since it is a hand-held device, we can move the instrument to any laboratory or animal facility on (or off) campus to perform our research and educational activities. This is also the type of newer technology that our graduates in human or animal clinical programs are likely to encounter when they graduate and begin their professional careers."

For further information about this program, contact Dr. Michael Murphy, Department of Natural Sciences, (518) 255-5445 or murphymj@cobleskill.edu.
