Facilities
Teaching Laboratories: SUNY Cobleskill, Department of Natural Sciences has over 12,000 square feet of modern laboratory space located in Wheeler Hall and in the Learning Resource Center. In addition, Cobleskill boasts the following, highly specialized facilities unique to any two-year campus, and many upper-division colleges.
The Behling Center for Histotechnology Education: This 1,400 sq. foot laboratory space is unique in the USA. It is designed and equipped as a high-quality, histotechnology laboratory (a lab where pathology specimens are processed into microscope slides for the physician making clinical diagnoses). The largest of its kind in the United States teaching institutions, the laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art microtomes, embedding centers, tissues processors, microscopes, etc. needed and used in contemporary pathology settings.
The Rachel Carson Undergraduate Research Laboratory: This laboratory is unique within New York States two-year and technical colleges. The laboratory is available to students and faculty interested in pursuing undergraduate research activities in cellular and molecular biology and histology. The laboratory was dedicated this year to Rachel Carson for her pioneering work on the effects of environmental pollutants and the health of ecosystems. The laboratory is currently host to a multidisciplinary research effort examining fetal kidney and lung function during chick development. The director of this laboratory is Dr. Pamela Colony, who also directs the Histotechnology program.
Other available facilities/resources: The college has unique resources not normally available to Natural Science departments at other institutions. For example, several interdisciplinary projects are currently underway involving our large animal facilities (lower back pain research with Milkhaus Laboratories and our Dairy Facilities) and with our hatchery (diet and ocular disease in hatchery fish populations). Past efforts have also included collaborative projects with Albany Medical Center, Bassett Research Institute, and the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague, Czech Republic.
