Overview
Students who choose to major in Crop Production and Soil Science at Cobleskill take a two-year course of study that prepares them for employment in private industry or public service. Students may elect to continue their education after receiving an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree by enrolling in a Bachelor of Technology (BT) degree n in Plant Science.
Students taking courses in the Crop Production and Soil Science program are exposed to up-to-date information presented by faculty who are highly trained and well educated. The Cobleskill philosophy is to produce graduates with "hands-on" experiences who are competent and successful in the field of agriculture after graduation. Over 98 percent of the Crop Production and Soil Science graduates find employment in their chosen area or continue their education.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion, student will be able to:
- Conduct soil tests.
- Explain photosynthesis and respiration in relation to plant growth and yield.
- Name the major anatomical parts of food and forage plants grown in the northeast.
- Identify at least 10 common insect, disease, and weed pests common to the northeast.
- Identify plant macronutrient deficiency symptoms.
Outstanding Facilities
A student studying Crop Production and Soil Science at SUNY Cobleskill may find himself/herself in a well equipped laboratory studying soil science one day and out on the college's 650+ acre farm studying crops the next. The campus is used extensively for laboratory experiences and the student is typically involved in activities such as collecting insects for a course in Entomology, gathering weeds for a course in Weed Identification, or surveying a field for a course in Surveying and Land Measurement.
Crop Production and Soil Science students must complete a minimum of 66 credit hours of academic work with a GPA of not less than 2.00. This includes 24 credits of major field requirements, 9 credits of agricultural electives, 22 credits of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and 11 credits of general electives.
