Computer Information Systems, A.A.S.
Computer Information Systems is a growing professional field with expanding opportunities for employment. Graduates of the Computer Information Systems;
- Provide technical assistance to computer system users.
- Plan, direct, or coordinate information systems, systems analysis, electronic data processing, and computer system development.
- Plan, coordinate and implement security measures to safeguard information in computer files against accidental or unauthorized damage, modification or disclosure.
- Recommend systems and network configurations, and determine hardware or software requirements related to such changes.
SUNY Cobleskill's Computer Information Systems program is designed to prepare successful graduates entry level positions as computer, network, and programming support specialists. Students are encouraged to continue their studies to better prepare them for the challenges in an ever-changing field. SUNY Cobleskill offers four advisement tracks within the CIS program; Web Development, End User Support, Network Support, and Programming. Successful graduates of SUNY Cobleskill's Computer Information Systems Program find employment as Help Desk Technicians, Software Support Specialists, Web Site Support Technicians, and Network Support Assistants.
Students pursuing the end user and network support tracks will receive hands-on training utilizing the latest hardware and software in state-of-the art computer laboratories, allowing them to provide network and user support in technology driven organizations.
Students pursuing the Programming track will focus on us programming languages such as C++, SQL, and Java. Successful graduates will be able to help develop and maintain information systems to support
Students pursuing the Web Development track will receive training using a wide variety of Web and Graphic Design tools. This will allow them to develop and support company websites.
Degree Requirements
The Computer Information Systems program offers prospective students 4 advisement tracks from which to select. These are Programming, Networking Support, End User Support, and Web Graphics and Design. All advisement tracks have a two-fold purpose: first, to provide technical competence in the field of computing with primary emphasis on the field of choice; and second, to provide a basic understanding of a business organization and the role of the computer center in such an organization.
To fulfill requirements for the Associate in Applied Science degree, the candidate must complete a minimum of 66 credit hours of academic work with a GPA of not less than 2.00. These include 9 credits in the major field, 27 credits of core electives, 22 credits in prescribed areas of liberal arts and sciences, and 8 credits of general electives as listed below. Students should select an advisement track from the selection offered below by the end of their first semester. Additionally, to qualify for the A.A.S. degree, candidates must also complete with a minimum cumulative GAP of 2.00 all required and elective courses bearing the major field course prefix "CITA"
