Histotechnicians are trained in the preparation and staining of tissues for microscopic examination and disease diagnosis by a Pathologist. The tissue may be obtained from an operating room, clinic, doctor's ofice, emergency room, or a postmortem examination. Histotechnicians may also assist the Pathologist in the preparation of frozen tissue sections which are used to provide rapid diagnosis while the patient is still undergoing surgery.

- SUNY Cobleskill has the only accredited *(NAACLS) degree granting Histotechnology program in the Northeast
- Recommended preparatory courses for the program include:
- New York State Regents math 1, 2 and 3 (or equivalent)
- At least two Regents level science courses (or equivalent), one of which should be biology
- Students lacking a science background man enter as an "Intended major
