ECHD 280 - Exceptional Children (C)

An introduction to childhood exceptionalities in the disability categories of sensory, health, physical, learning communication, and behavior disorders as well as covering autism, ADHD, traumatic brain injury and giftedness. Definitions, assessment, diagnosis, incidence, causes, instructional strategies, issues, and trends are examined in each category of exceptionality. An overview of laws, policies, and practices with emphasis on Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and placement of students in special education will be covered. In addition, the importance of early intervention, transition, and parental involvement will be discussed. [Fall, Spring]
