Business Administration A.A.S. Instruction

SUNY Cobleskill offers two associate degrees in Business Administration. The Associate in Science (AS) Degree program provides the basic knowledge and skills in accounting, law, marketing, management, and human resources necessary to be an effective professional in the business field. Students have the option of choosing a concentration in areas such as entrepreneurship, international business or sports management. The AS degree prepares students for seamless transfer into baccalaureate programs at SUNY Cobleskill or other four-year institutions.

The Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree provides students with the basic training necessary to succeed in the workforce while allowing them the opportunities to explore many careers. Major field requirements address basic knowledge and skills in accounting, law, marketing, management, and human resources. The AAS Degree prepares students for the workforce.

> A variety of liberal arts and sciences courses interwoven with fundamental business courses provide students with a well-rounded, business-centered education.

> Small classes led by experienced faculty who instill the fundamentals of business through a personal perspective and an environmental perspective – including the economic, global, social and legal platforms a business operates within.

> Students are taught by professors who have practical real-life business experience in their appropriate fields.

> Coursework that stresses building skills in critical analysis, problem solving and decision making, effective communication, efficient teamwork, and managing diversity in the workplace

> Class projects that develop the necessary skills for the professional work environment.

     What Will I Learn?

The curriculum covers basic business skill areas like accounting, micro- and macro-economics, communications, marketing, and law. Applied learning projects provide plenty of opportunity for students to develop the real-world business skills critical to succeed after graduation. Students can specialize or broaden their education through elective courses.

In the Associate Degree programs students learn to

> Incorporate various means/methods used to communicate effectively with designate audiences.
> Perform the basics of accounting transactions and prepare basic financial statements.
> Demonstrate a comprehension of management roles and responsibilities.
> Demonstrate the 4 Ps and marketing segmentation.
> Understand both legal and ethical behavior in performing managerial activities.
> Work as part of a team in completing projects.
> Be prepared to enter a four-year degree program or enter the work place.

     Meet the Faculty

Scott Ferguson Associate Professor Dr. Scott Ferguson joined SUNY Cobleskill’s faculty in 2008 after working for 20 years in HR Management and 17 years as an Entrepreneur. He received an Ed. D. from St. John Fisher College’s Executive Leadership Program. Dr. Ferguson has owned, developed, managed, and profitably grown five small businesses. He has international experience through his education and his global responsibilities in business. He has taught Decision Making, Entrepreneurship, Ethics and Management, Financial Management, International Business, International Marketing, Management, Management Communication, and Management Policies and Issues. Additionally, he teaches a Business Plan workshop for small business owners, advises the Business Careers Club on campus, and coaches student teams in the New York State Annual Business Plan Competition. | 518-255-5462

Paul J. Gemmiti Paul J. Gemmiti Is Professor of Accounting and Financial Services and has taught a wide variety of courses including accounting and finance courses at Siena College and The College of Saint Rose. Paul is currently a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Financial Planning Association. His professional career included Senior Accountant at KPMG Peat Marwick, CPAs, where he prepared tax returns for large corporations and high net worth clients. He has consulted with several local and regional CPA firms and has successfully operated his own tax and financial planning firm for over thirty years. Paul has had over a dozen SUNY Cobleskill students work as interns in his firm, many of which went on to earn their CPA or become employed in the accounting or financial services industry.

In May 2016 Paul was awarded the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and for many years he has been the recipient of the Faculty Appreciation Award for his dedication to students. | 518-255- 5565

Charles Moran Charles Moran is Professor of Business Administration and Director of the Financial Planning Program. He teaches Investment Planning, Estate Planning, Introduction to Financial Planning, Risk Management & Insurance Planning, Employee Benefits & Retirement Planning, Case Studies in Financial Planning, Business Law I & II, Management Communications and Human Resource Management and continues to teach graduate courses in the summer program at Harvard University. He also serves the statewide SUNY University Faculty Senate as a Senator and member of the Executive Committee.

Charles Moran's professional career in financial services includes Pension Trust Officer of The Chase Manhattan Bank; Senior Vice President of Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company; Chairman, President and CEO of Lionel D. Edie and Company, Inc.; Founding President of Government Securities Clearing Corporation; Chair of the Ethics and Government Relations Committees in the Financial Planning Association; Member of the founding FPA Board of Directors; Chair of the statewide SUNY University Faculty Senate's Ethics and Institutional Integrity Committee; and leader of the Certified Financial Planning Board of Standards as Chair of the Board of Directors. | 518-255- 5457

Katrina PearlProfessor Katrina Pearl teaches courses in Marketing and Management. Prior to joining SUNY Cobleskill in August 2015, she worked for Schenectady County Community College as an Assistant Professor of Management and has several years of industry experience in accounting, finance, and real estate. Professor Pearl teaches Principles of Marketing, Advertising & Promotion, International Marketing, E-Marketing, Marketing Research, and Management. Her publications include “The Influence of Culture and Implicit Beliefs on the Leadership Development of Women in Global Higher Educational Institutions” presented at the International Journal of Arts and Sciences Conference at Harvard University and “Faculty as Opinion Leaders: A Major Source of Influence on Innovation Opportunity in Higher Education” presented at The Northeast Business & Economics Association at Monmouth University. | 518-255-5381

Mary Rooney Professor Mary Rooney is a Certified Public Accountant with a Bachelors Degree in Accounting and a Master's Degree in Curriculum Design and Instructional Technology. She worked for the Internal Revenue Service for three years where she received extensive training in all aspects of individual and business tax law. As an internal auditor with the City of Phoenix for 13 years, she gained experience in forensic accounting and not for profit accounting. She has a Master’s Degree in Education and ten years of experience teaching a wide variety of accounting classes. She currently teaches Financial, Managerial, Intermediate, Not for Profit, Cost Accounting and Fraud Examination classes. Professor Rooney is also a Certified Fraud Examiner. | 518-255-5562

     Study Abroad

Students can participate in a wide variety of study abroad programs. Our students also have the ability to complete their internships in other countries. We have had Business students study abroad or complete internships in Australia, Costa Rica, New Zealand, and Turkey.
