Associate in Applied Science Degree

The greatly increased amount of free time now available as a result of technological advances has produced a leisure-oriented society and a rapidly expanding recreational industry. The Recreation and Sports Area Management curriculum prepares students to manage recreational facilities in both the private and public sectors. Professional opportunities in this diverse field include careers supervising and maintaining ski areas, parks, private campsites, nature centers, golf courses, athletic complexes, public grounds and similar facilities. The campus recreational facilities which include ski slopes, athletic fields, swimming pool, tennis courts, golf greens and recreation lodge are available for study and laboratory use. In addition, many public recreational facilities in the area provide a laboratory for students pursuing careers in Recreation and Sports Area Management.
Employment Opportunities
Employment opportunities in Recreation and Sports Area Management include: golf course superintendents; athletic field supervisors; park, grounds or ski area managers; lawn maintenance specialists; nature center directors; campground managers; and recreational facility caretakers.
Degree Requirements
To fulfill requirements for the Associate in Applied Science degree, the candidate in the major field of Recreation and Sports Area Management must complete a minimum of 66 credit hours of academic work with a GPA of not less than 2.00. These include 37-38 credits of major field requirements, 22 credits in prescribed areas of liberal arts and sciences, and 6-7 credits of general electives.

Liberal Arts and Sciences Requirements
ENGL 101 – 3 credits, additional ENGL course (not including ENGL 099 ); 1 credit in Physical Education (PHED); 6 credits of Science/Mathematics (any BIOL, CHEM, PHYS, PSCI; BIOL 111 or BIOL 116 , MATH 111 , and CHEM 111 or CHEM 121 recommended); 6 credits Social Science (any AAMS, ANTH, ECON, GOVT, HIST, NAMS, PSYC, SOSC); and additional Liberal Arts and Sciences courses totaling 3 credits (AAMS, AGSC, ANTH, ARTS, BIOL, CHEM, ECON, ENGL, FREN, GOVT, HIST, HUMS, MATH, MUSC, NAMS, PHED, PHIL, PHYS, PSCI, PSYC, SOSC, SPAN).
