Featured Speakers:

Dr. Ernest Bailey, PhD
What the Horse Owner Should Know About Horse Genomics

Dr. Bailey completed his PhD at the University of California, Davis in 1980 and joined the faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Kentucky. He is a professor at the MH Gluck Equine Research Center and conducts research and graduate student training in the area of horse genetics. During the past 13 years he has served as coordinator of the International Equine Genome Workshop. He, his students and colleagues at Kentucky have studied immunogenetics, gene mapping, cytogenetics and coat color genetics for horses.

Dr. Samantha Brooks, PhD
What Can Genome Do For You?
Current and Future Applications of Equine Genomics

Dr. Brooks is a lifelong horsewoman and has competed in dressage and eventing for many years. Dr. Brooks earned a B.S. in agricultural biotechnology, focusing in equine science and genetics, from the University of Kentucky. Dr. Brooks continued at UK and obtained a PhD in Veterinary Science, specializing in genetics. Dr. Brook’s doctoral research at the Gluck Equine Research Center centered on variation at the KIT locus and developed two DNA tests for spotting patterns in the horse; Tobiano and Sabino
1. Following her PhD, she was awarded the Paul Mellon Post Doctoral fellowship to investigate gene expression and inflammation, with particular interest in laminitis. Dr. Brooks is presently an assistant professor in the Animal Science Department at Cornell University.

Dr. E. Gus Cothran, PhD
Lessons in Conservation Genetics From The Standardbred Horse

Dr. Cothran began his career at North Texas State University in Denton where he obtained a B.S. and M.S. degrees in Biology. Dr. Cothran received his PhD in genetics from the University of Oklahoma in 1982. Dr. Cothran studied population genetics of white-tailed deer at the University of Georgia’s Savannah River Ecology Laboratory near Aiken, S.C. and in addition has worked on genetics of horses and a species of South American opossum at the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Cothran moved to University of Kentucky in 1986 and assumed a position as Director of the Equine Parentage Testing and Research Laboratory and Research Professor in the Department of Veterinary Science. In 2006 Dr. Cothran moved to Texas A&M University where he is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Veterinary Integrative Biosciences which is in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Science. Dr. Cothran has a genotyping laboratory that does typing of horses, cattle, dogs and cats. Dr. Cothran is involved in research in genetic mapping, genetics of specific characteristics, population genetics and conservation genetics of rare breeds.
