Grants & Employment
Financial aid is divided into three basic categories: grants/scholarships, loans, and employment programs. Grants/Scholarships do not have to be repaid. Loans usually carry some form of interest payment and must be paid back to the lender. Employment Programs allow the student the chance to earn money to help with educational expenses.

Available to matriculated undergraduates who have NOT earned a first bachelor’s degree. Eligibility is determined by a federal formula. You must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.

Yearly awards range from $609 -$5350.

SEOG

Federal Supplemental Opportunity Grant
Does not need to be repaid.

Available to matriculated undergraduates who have NOT earned a first bachelor’s degree and who are Pell eligible. You must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.

Awards can range from $100 to $4000 per year.

ACG

Academic Competitiveness Grant.
Does not need to be repaid.

Available to undergraduates receiving a Pell Grant who are U.S. citizens enrolled full-time in their first or second academic year of study.  Student must have successfully completed a rigorous high school program, as determined by the state or local education agency and recognized by the Secretary of Education. Second year students must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0.

SMART

National Sciences & Mathematics Access to Retain Talent.
Does not need to be repaid.

Available to undergraduates receiving a Pell Grant who are U.S. citizens enrolled full-time in their third and fourth academic year of study who are majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security. The student must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 in coursework required for the major.

Up to $4000 for each of the third and fourth academic years

Tuition Assistance Program
Does not need to be repaid.

Administered by the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) and is available to full-time matriculated students who are New York State residents. Additional information and application procedures are available on the HESC web site. Satisfactory Academic Progress is a requirement.

Part-Time TAP

Part-time students at approved schools in New York State who were first-time, full-time freshmen in 2006-07 may be eligible for Part-Time TAP to help them pay for college beginning in 2007-08. Part-Time TAP is a grant and does not have to be paid back. Part-Time TAP is not the same as Aid for Part-Time Study. 

Have earned 12 credits or more in each of the two consecutive semesters, for a minimum total of 24 credits earned.
Student must meet the minimum “C” average academic requirements.

Be taking 6 but fewer than 12 credits per semester.  Not be in default on a student loan guaranteed by HESC and not be in any repayment of state awards.  Meet income eligibility limitations.

Awards are a percentage of the students Full TAP award based on number of credits the student takes.

Accelerated Studies
At SUNY Cobleskill this is considered TAP for SUMMER Students

Accelerated Studies is an extra TAP payment in an award year, over and above the regular annual award, in certain circumstances.
For terms beginning after January 1, 2007, students must earn 24 credits in the prior two semesters to qualify for accelerated study.

Award is $2500 or up to tuition cost for the extra term.

APTS
Aid for Part-Time Study.
Does not need to be repaid.

Available to matriculated undergraduate students who are New York State residents enrolled for 3-11 credits for fall /spring terms. Eligibility is based on New York State net taxable income.

Awards provide up to $2,000 per year for part-time undergraduate study. An APTS award cannot exceed tuition charges.

An APTS Application and a copy of the student’s and parents (if applicable) New York State Income Tax Return must be submitted to the Office of Student Financial Aid Services by the last day of the add/drop period for each semester.

EOP

Educational Opportunity Program.

Does not need to be repaid.

Available to undergraduate students enrolled in the EOP Program SUNY Cobleskill. EOP students must be full-time to receive these funds.

Awards amounts are dependent upon the availability of state budget funding for this program.

In order to be considered for the EOP program students must apply as an incoming freshman during the admissions application process. Transfer students who have already been admitted to an EOP program in another academic institution should apply to the Undergraduate Admissions office as an EOP transfer student. Space is limited.

Work-Study

All students who are enrolled or expected to enroll for at least 6 credits hours per semester in a degree or certificate program.

Additional State Grants

New York State Veterans Tuition Awards
The New York State Veterans Tuition Awards Program (VTA) provides awards to eligible veterans matriculated at an undergraduate or graduate degree-granting institution or in an approved vocational training program in New York State. VTA has grown significantly over the past few years. In 2008, VTA was amended to expand the number of eligible veterans, as well as to increase the amount of the maximum award. Awards are available for up to the full cost of undergraduate tuition for New York State residents at the State University of New York or actual tuition charged, whichever is less. (Note: the 2009-10 State Budget requires that each award be reduced by two percent for the 2009-10 academic year).

Regents Awards for Children of Deceased or Disabled Veterans
Grants are awarded to New York State residents who are children of certain deceased or disabled veterans and who attend approved public and independent colleges and schools in New York State.

Applications are accepted from a child of a veteran who died, or who has a current disability of 50 percent or more, or who had such disability at the time of death, resulting from U.S. military service during one of the following periods:

April 16, 1917-November 11, 1918;
December 7, 1941-December 31, 1946;
June 25, 1950-July 27, 1953;
October 1, 1961-March 29, 1973;

and who is a legal resident of New York State. The parent must be a legal resident of New York State at the time of entry into military service, or, if the parent died as the result of military service, at the time of death. Students whose parents served in the Persian Gulf conflict may also be eligible.
Regents awards to children of deceased or disabled veterans are independent of family income or tuition charge, and are in addition to such other grants or awards to which the applicant may be entitled. The amount of the award is $450 per year, for up to five years, depending on the normal length of the program of study, of full-time study in a college or in a hospital nursing school in New York State. A special application, obtainable from a high school principal or counselor, must be filed with the New York Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC), Tower Building, Empire State Plaza, Albany, New York 12255. Documentary evidence to establish eligibility is required with the application. Any high school counselor can provide assistance with this.

State Assistance for Native Americans
Grants of $2,000 are awarded to high school graduates who are residents of one of New York's eight major reservations and who attend an approved post secondary educational institution in New York State. Information may be obtained by contacting the New York State Native American Programs, Room 543, New York State Education Dept., Washington Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12234.

Vocational Rehabilitation
The New York State Office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID) provides program counseling and financial assistance for students who have certain physical, mental or emotional disabilities. Contact the nearest VESID for information, or write to the University of the State of New York, State Education Department, Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, Albany, N.Y. 12234.

Educational Opportunity Program (EOP)
Funded by New York State, this program is available to all New York State residents who are academically deprived and historically economically disadvantaged. Academic eligibility is determined by the College Administration Office while financial eligibility is determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid. Students must file a FAFSA and an EOP Financial Eligibility form. See the Education Opportunity home page for more information.
