SUNY Cobleskill Professor David Thompson Invited to Present at USDA/HACU Leadership Group Conference

October 25, 2011

Professor David Thompson, professor in SUNY Cobleskill’s Department of Agricultural Business and Animal Science, has been invited by the USDA/HACU Leadership Group to present “Managing the Multicultural Workforce in Agriculture” course at the USDA/HACU conference in San Antonio on Oct. 28.

Thompson, along with Adjunct Professor Rita Pineyro, decided to create the course after attending two conferences in New York State entitled “Managing the Hispanic Workforce in Agriculture.”

According to Thompson, over time the U.S. dairy industry has undergone substantial structural changes resulting in fewer, larger dairies. New York State’s dairy industry has experienced similar changes in its overall structure. The new dynamics have come with an increased demand for non-family labor to help operate the dairies, and the trend appears to be toward a greater percentage of Spanish speaking workers.

The USDA/HACU Leadership Group is a national body of USDA and Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) leaders appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture and the president of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. The organization recommends policies and programs to strengthen USDA partnerships with HSIs and provides leadership and strategic direction to the USDA Hispanic-Serving Institutions National Program office.
