SUNY Cobleskill Hosts Culinary Extravaganza

SUNY Cobleskill hosts a Culinary Extravaganza on Friday, March 30, from 6 – 10 p.m., in Bouck Ballroom. The evening features culinary delights prepared by SUNY Cobleskill students under the direction of local and alumni celebrity chefs, and entertainment by the SUNY Cobleskill Jazz Band and soulful blues group Windward.

Proceeds from the event will help build SUNY Cobleskill Foundation’s annual fund, which supports many campus initiatives, and all scholarship funds within the Foundation and Alumni Association.
Three distinguished professionals are serving as the Culinary Extravaganza’s event chairs: Kevin O’Donnell ’73, vice president for food and beverage operations at the New England Culinary Institute; Michael Ty ’73, national president of the American Culinary Federation (ACF); and Widjiono (Yono) Purnomo, owner of Albany, N.Y.’s Yono’s & dp An American Brasserie.
A seasoned hotelier with a diversified background in hospitality and culinary leadership, O’Donnell spend 13 years as vice president and innkeeper of The Old Tavern at Grafton (Grafton, Vt.), a historic hotel owned and operated by a non-profit foundation. Among his professional achievements, O’Donnell was appointed and elected chair of the Governor’s Travel and Recreation Council. He was chairman of the Vermont Chamber of Commerce and a past recipient of the Vermont Lodging and Restaurant Association’s Borden E. Avery Innkeeper of the Year award.
Ty is currently in his third term as ACF national president. In Las Vegas, he owns and operates MT Cuisine, LLC, which offers event management, chef consulting, and sales and marketing of foodservice products for Chef Hat, Inc. and Hospitality Culinaire, Inc., a family-owned business that is a quick-service restaurant operation featuring two branded concepts at McCarran International Airport. Ty is a 2011 recipient of the North American Association of Food Equipment Manufacturers Doctorate of Foodservice Award.
A native of Jakarta, Indonesia, Yono has represented New York State in the American Seafood Challenge, and the United States as captain of a three-member team in the British Open Cookery Championship. He has been featured on The Today Show and the TVFood Network, and presented his cuisine to sold-out audiences at New
York City’s famed James Beard House. Yono has won numerous “Best of Show” awards, as well as gold, silver and bronze medals in national and international competitions.
Other Culinary Extravaganza featured chefs include Jackie Baldwin of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; Mark Graham of Mezza Notte Ristorante (Albany); Anand “AJ” Jayapal of the Mallozzi Group; Dale Miller of Sperry’s (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.); Marla Ortega of Illium Café (Troy, N.Y.); Jaime Ortiz of Angelo’s 677 Prime (Albany); and Brian Sterner of Gideon Putnam Resort (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.).
