March 5, 2012
SUNY Cobleskill’s three-student team of Sean Charles, David Allen Vastola and Stanley Zombek finished second in the New England Regional Turf Bowl on Feb. 8 in Providence, R.I. It was the second appearance in the Turf Bowl for SUNY Cobleskill, which placed fourth in 2011.
Charles (Ballston Lake, NY), Vastola (West Seneca, NY) and Zombek (Oriskany Falls, NY) accumulated 88 of 113 points in competition against 15 groups of students. Turf Bowl participants included two other SUNY Cobleskill teams and teams from the University of Connecticut, the University of Massachusetts and the University of Rhode Island. The students were led by Dr. Alex Ellram, Professor of turfgrass management. Dr. Zhongchun Jiang, professor of turfgrass management also attended the competition.
The Turf Bowl tested students’ knowledge in turfgrass growth and development, pest identification, pest management, and turfgrass mathematics. Contestants also answered essay questions related to turfgrass management.
“The Turf Bowl contest gives students the opportunity to gain a better understanding of turfgrass management and the skills needed for future positions,” said Ellram. “It is an excellent networking experience for students to meet potential employers and other students in the same field. Being part of the contest keeps SUNY Cobleskill and its students recognized as being at the top of the turfgrass management field. It also connects the students with the alumni that are employed in the turfgrass management industry.”
