April 4, 2012

SUNY Cobleskill’s Ilianna Armata of Athens, Greece, and Benjamin German of Oneonta, N.Y., are 2012 recipients of the Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. Armata and German were honored and presented with the award during a ceremony on Wednesday, April 4, at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany, N.Y.

Armata, pursuing a degree in Health Sciences Studies, has excelled inside and outside the classroom. As part of her education, she has shadowed professionals at Cobleskill’s Family Medical Care Association, a gynecology practice in Athens, and an ophthalmology practice in Syracuse, N.Y.

A student leader in the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, Armata is president of the Medical Careers Club, secretary of the International Club, and as a resident assistant was honored with the Excellence in Programming Award. She also serves as a peer tutor in the Center for Academic Support and Excellence and was a volunteer for the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens.

German is studying Fisheries and Aquaculture. He has received the Outstanding Junior in Fisheries and Wildlife Award, the John Urban Award for the outstanding graduate in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, and the Robert C. MacWatters Research Award in Aquatic Science.

In addition to serving as historian of the American Fisheries Society (AFS) student chapter, German coordinated the AFS Halloween Fishing Derby, is a fly fishing instructor at the annual Fish and Wildlife Festival, and an Earth Day volunteer. He has served as an assistant with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation-Oneida Lake Hatchery and assisted the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the Carmen River Estuary. German’s volunteer work includes involvement in mission trips to Nicaragua and Cambodia, and at a soup kitchen in Brooklyn, N.Y.

“These are outstanding students who have earned the right to be recognized among the State University’s finest,” said Dr. Candace S. Vancko, SUNY Cobleskill’s officer-in-charge. “Their commitment to academic achievement and community service is exceptional.”

The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence honors SUNY students who have best demonstrated and have been recognized for their integration of academic excellence with leadership, athletics, career achievement, community service, or creative and performing arts.
