SUNY Cobleskill 1995 alumnus Pete Dominick is Host of Sirius XM Radio’s Stand Up! With Pete Dominick, former host of CNN’s What the Week, and was the nightly warm-up act for The Colbert Report on Comedy Central.
SUNY Cobleskill announced today that 1995 alumnus, comedian and media personality Pete Dominick will speak at its May 11th commencement ceremony. Dominick is host of the Sirius XM radio program, Stand Up! With Pete Dominick, now on the new Indie channel 104 weekdays from 6:00 to 9:00 a.m. ET, replaying from 6:00 to 9:00 a.m. PT. He’s hosted guests ranging from Sen. Bernie Sanders, radical intellectual Noam Chomsky, Jesse Ventura, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. The Huffington Post recently called Stand Up! “truly the best political talk show in the air today,” and Hollywood Reporter included Dominick in an article featuring personalities to watch in talk radio.
One of Dominick’s primary audiences is the college crowd—he has performed at more than 300 college campuses in four years. A key component of Dominick’s act involves current events, politics and social issues, as well as his personal life. His quick wit, instant likeability and unique way of engaging any audience have made him one of the most sought after M.C.’s at the New York Clubs—and he’s played some of the best, including The Comedy Cellar, Gotham, The Comic Strip, Caroline’s, Comix, Stand Up NY, Dangerfield’s and The Laugh Factory. After performing at the 2006 Just For Laughs Montreal Comedy Festival, Dominick was offered a position as host of a fast-paced live comedy hour on Sirius network’s Raw Dog Comedy Channel.
His reputation for “working the crowd” led to opportunities to warm up audiences for live television tapings including programs on MTV, CNBC, and Comedy Central. For the last 6 years he was permanent warm-up for Stephen Colbert on The Colbert Report on Comedy Central. He was also featured on the Last Comic Standing and The Apprentice. In 2010 CNN hired him as resident “offbeat reporter” on John King USA which led CNN to offer him his own half-hour news wrap-up show, What the Week in 2010, where he blended tongue-in-cheek irreverence with an insightful look back at the real issues making and missing the headlines. He continues to be a contributor to CNN.
As a SUNY Cobleskill student, Dominick earned an associate degree in Liberal Arts & Science, served as a resident assistant, played lacrosse, and participated in Little Theatre, Student Government, and Delta Psi Omega, the National Theatre Honor Society. Not only was he the PA announcer for men’s and women’s basketball games at the College, but SUNY Cobleskill is where he performed his first stand-up comedy act. Dominick returns to SUNY Cobleskill every year to perform for freshman orientation, mixing comedy with thoughtful advice for the development of their college experience. “I go back to Cobleskill almost every year to perform, which has been important and fun for me but I never thought I'd be asked to give the commencement address,” Dominick said. “I can’t imagine a higher honor for me or my family."
He credits his Cobleskill experience with providing the skills he uses today to discuss global issues with a broad audience. "I received an excellent education at Cobleskill, but for me it was more about what happened outside the classroom. I learned so much about myself and who I wanted to be,” Dominick explained. “I will always value the diversity I was exposed to on campus and the opportunity I was offered through it.”
”We are proud to welcome Pete Dominick back to SUNY Cobleskill as our keynote speaker,” said Candace S. Vancko, Officer-in-Charge. “He is a highly creative, successful and loyal Cobleskill graduate whose success inspires our students.”
