SUNY Cobleskill Awarded 2014 Military Friendly Schools® Designation

SUNY Cobleskill has received recognition, for the second year in a row, through inclusion on Victory Media's Military Friendly Schools® list, which honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace America's military service members, veterans, and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus.

"I am elated that SUNY Cobleskill has once again received recognition for being Military Friendly for a second consecutive year," said Matthew LaLonde, Director of Judicial and Veteran Affairs at the College. "This recognition is a tribute to the military friendly culture that SUNY Cobleskill has promoted for many years."

At SUNY Cobleskill, the Student Veteran Association is a student-run organization whose mission is to increase access for veterans into the College while providing them with guidance, mentoring and an array of student-centered services. SVA has also implemented many programs over the past year that have been very successful, including raising more than $500 and offering community service toward flood relief and aid for local veterans, flood relief for NYC victims, Wreaths Across America, Hearts of Hope and Veteran's Day celebrations.

The group is also partnered with the national organization, Team Red, White and Blue, whose mission it is to enrich the lives of America's veterans by connecting them to their community through physical and social activity. Over the course of the academic year, the SUNY Cobleskill SVA will be hosting a number of fitness events that will invite both campus and Schoharie County veterans to come together and socialize and develop camaraderie.

A Veteran Memorial Plaza at the College, dedicated April 26, 2013, was built in honor of the many veterans who have served our country. Inspired through the vision of SUNY Cobleskill Landscape Design student and president of the Student Veteran Association, Jeffrey Vogt, the plaza is the first symbolic representation of all those who have served in the military and have been a part of our community.

"Inclusion on the 2014 list of Military Friendly Schools® shows SUNY Cobleskill's commitment to providing a supportive environment for military students," said Sean Collins, Vice President at Victory Media and a nine-year Navy veteran. "The need for education is growing and our mission is to provide the military community with transparent, world-class resources to assist in their search for schools." Complete survey methodology is available at militaryfriendlyschools.com/Article/methodology-press-kit.

The Military Friendly Schools® media and website, found at www.militaryfriendlyschools.com, feature the list, interactive tools and search functionality to help military students find the best school to suit their unique needs and preferences. The 1,868 colleges, universities and trade schools on this year's list exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience. These schools have world-class programs and policies for student support on campus, academic accreditation, credit policies, flexibility and other services to those who served.

Now in its fifth year, the 2014 list of Military Friendly Schools ® was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 10,000 schools nationwide approved for VA tuition funding. The survey results that comprise the 2014 list were independently tested by Ernst & Young LLP based upon the weightings and methodology established by Victory Media. Each year schools taking the survey are held to a higher standard than the previous year via improved methodology, criteria and weightings developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Board (AAB) consisting of educators from schools across the country. A full list of board members can be found at http://militaryfriendlyschools.com/board.
A full story and detailed list of 2014 Military Friendly Schools® will be highlighted in the annual Guide to Military Friendly Schools ®, distributed in print and digital format to hundreds of thousands of active and former military personnel in early October.
