Section E
Student Responsibilities

5.00 Degree Requirements
Responsibility rests with the student to know the requirements of the program in which s/he is enrolled, and if a full-time student, to carry no fewer than 12 credit hours per semester. A 2.00 average (C average) is required for graduation in college level courses (number designations of 100 or greater) and in the overall cumulative average.
5.01 Students are also responsible for meeting deadlines as these relate to academic procedural matters, e.g. add/drop, course selection, free withdrawal.

5.10 Course Requirements
The student is expected to fulfill course requirements as specified in course outlines.

5.15 Attendance and Absences
The College assumes that a student who registers in a course accepts responsibility for full participation in all course activities. Students are therefore expected to attend classes and laboratories regularly. Standards of performance are established by the individual instructor and will be explained by each instructor at the first session of each class; each student will receive a course outline.

Specific regulations regarding attendance are listed below in Sections 5.20-5.25. As a general rule, the class is to remain a minimum of ten minutes if the instructor is no present at the scheduled time of the class.

Students who are excused from classes because of a field trip, athletic contest or religious holiday are responsible for making up work to the satisfaction of the instructors concerned. If assignments are due during the classes missed, students must hand them in prior to their departure. Also, students are responsible for obtaining assignments and being prepared for the next class session.

5.20 Attendance
Registration in a course assumes full participation in that course. Therefore, a student is expected to attend class sessions regularly.
5.21 Individual instructors shall define “excessive absences” in their respective course policy statements. In no instance may the definition of “excessive absence” exceed being absent for two consecutive weeks or more, or for a total of three weeks or more in a semester. These limitations shall be pro-rated for modules.
5.22

Excessive absence may result in cancellation of the student’s course registration. The course instructor requests such cancellation from the dean of the division in the degree program which is responsible for the course. This written cancellation results in grades of “W” or “F.”

If the student wishes to appeal (see 4.26), s/he must do so in writing to the vice president for academic affairs within seven days of the cancellation notice.

5.23 All academic work must be made up regardless of the reason(s) for absences from class(es).
5.24

The instructor’s attendance policy, as stated in the course outline, determines how absences will be treated in that course.

Any anticipated absence should be brought to the instructor’s attention as soon as the student is aware of it, so that appropriate accommodations regarding completion of work may be made.

Illness should be reported as soon as possible. (Proof required at the discretion of the instructor.)

5.25 State law requires that any student in an institution of higher education who is unable to attend classes on a particular day or days because of his/her religious beliefs is to be excused from any examination or any study or work requirements. State law also stipulates that we have the responsibility to make available equivalent opportunities to make up work missed because of these absences and that students have the obligation to make up any work missed.

5.30 Repeating Required Failed Courses
Students must repeat required courses for which a grade of “F,” “WF,” or “U” was assigned. The last grade earned becomes the grade of record.

5.40 Advisor Consultation
Students are expected to consult with their advisors about academic matters, and obtain the signatures required on academic forms.

5.50

Academic Integrity
Students are expected to exercise integrity in all academic matters. Failure to do so may result in dismissal from a course.

Plagiarism, cheating, and violations of academic regulations will not be condoned and will subject the student to dismissal from a course. The course grade will be assigned by the instructor. The instructor makes his/her recommendation to the division dean for the appropriate action.

5.60 Expected Behavior in the Classroom
Students are expected to respect the educational environment as established by the faculty member. All individuals are expected to demonstrate respect for the rights and responsibilities of the faculty member and of each other.

5.70 Grade Posting
Students who prefer not to have grades posted by student number must so request in writing to the instructor by the end of the first week of classes.

5.80 Final Examinations: Conflict/Overload
The student will report conflicts or overloads (6+ hours of examinations on one day) to the Registrar’s Office where appropriate arrangements will be made to resolve these matters.

5.90 Academic Progress
Students are responsible for being aware of their academic progress/standing in courses.
