- Agriculture & Natural Resources
Agriculture and natural resources are thriving industries in New York State and the Northeast, with job openings for qualified personnel exceeding the annual number of graduates. SUNY Cobleskill has been educating agriculturists since 1916 and offers one of the largest and most diverse agricultural programs in the eastern United States . Cobleskill is widely known for agriculture, horticulture and natural resources education. Employers, guidance counselors and alumni testify to the College's outstanding reputation.
While some SUNY Cobleskill graduates continue to go into production agriculture following graduation, increasing numbers find rewarding careers in one of the diverse service areas related to agriculture: marketing, processing, landscaping, exporting, finance, research, consulting and engineering, among others. Many of these employment opportunities are located in metropolitan areas.
Graduates of SUNY Cobleskill's Agriculture and Natural Resources programs are helping to meet some of the challenges facing us today: how to utilize the new technologies developed through biotechnology, how to make U.S. agriculture more competitive in the global marketplace, and how to assure an abundant, healthy food supply while safeguarding our environment.
At Cobleskill, our rural campus serves as an “outdoor laboratory” for hands-on skill building. An arboretum, fish hatchery, 14 greenhouses, agricultural engineering laboratories, computer center, dairy, livestock, equine and other up-to-date facilities comprise our 650-acre agricultural complex, which includes an operating farm contiguous to the campus. Agricultural classrooms and laboratories are just a short walk from residence halls.
More than 30 full-time faculties bring a wealth of experience from various fields to their classrooms and laboratories and work closely with students in small-class settings. Student organizations such as American Animal Producers Club, Associated Landscape Contractors of America, Dairy Cattle Club, Plant Science Club, Post Secondary Agriculture Students, Student Horsemen's Association, Agricultural Engineering Club, Forestry Club, and Turf Club contribute to the academic experience while giving students a chance to work together on club projects and activities.
