Transportation

SUNY Cobleskill requires all travel arrangements (flight numbers/times, and train or bus schedules to campus) 14 business days prior to coming to campus. You must report this information to Dr. Susan Jagendorf-Sobierajski at jagends@cobleskill.edu.

The office is open Monday through Friday 9:00am - 5:00pm.

The office is closed Saturday and Sunday.

We recommend that you fly into Albany International Airport (ALB). That is the closest airport to SUNY Cobleskill. However, some international students arrive in the U.S. at John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport in New York City or Newark (EWR) Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. It is best to fly to Albany if you first arrive in Newark. If you are continuing by airplane to Albany International Airport (ALB), use only a direct, non-stop connecting flight.

While going through U.S. Customs upon arrival in the U.S., be sure to have your passport and I-20 student visa available to show U.S. Customs officials. You will need to claim your luggage and walk through U.S. Customs before rechecking your luggage again if you are flying to Albany International Airport.

  • The "AirTrain" travels from JFK and Newark airports to Penn Station in New York City.

    Information on the AirTrain

From Penn Station you can take the A, C or E subway line one stop to the Port Authority Bus Station to get a bus to SUNY Cobleskill (Adirondack Trailways or Shortline companies). Trains from Penn Station go to Albany, but you will still need transportation to Cobleskill after that. Therefore, it is better to take a bus. The bus trip is a longer ride, but you can arrive right on the SUNY Cobleskill campus (you will be directed to change buses in Albany).
  • Several transportation companies offer reliable, direct bus connections between JFK and Newark airports and bus or train stations in New York City. You can purchase a one-way ticket from the "Ground Transportation" counter in the baggage claim area.
  • We recommend that you do not hire a taxi: travel is expensive and taxi service may not be reliable or safe.
  • If you plan on taking the train from New York City to Albany, make sure you take the bus routed to "Penn Station". If you plan on taking the bus from New York City to Albany, make sure you take the bus routed to "Port Authority" bus station.

After your arrival at the airport or bus station you should look for a SUNY Cobleskill representative if pickup has been arranged in advance. Before departing from your home, photocopy all important documents, including your passport and student visa, and I-20. Be sure to keep the photocopies in your carry-on luggage. To conveniently get to campus, be sure to book flights that arrive in the U.S. during the daytime. Getting to campus late in the evening can be difficult. Also, never leave your bags unattended when traveling.
